About Tatiana

Tatiana Svistunova, printmaker and illustrator

Tatiana is a contemporary artist and printmaker based in the Netherlands. Her art style is influenced by Japanese art (Mokuhanga and Shinhanga), woodblock printing, and classic poster design (Art Nouveau and Art Deco). Her works are inspired by nature, folklore, fairy tales, and, of course, the day-to-day life of her cats. Tatiana deeply enjoys working with vibrant colours, inks, and gradients.

Tatiana started drawing from an early age and can't remember her life before that moment. She continued her artistic journey, studying book illustration and traditional printmaking techniques, specializing in etching. However, after graduating, Tatiana decided to try building a career in the digital art space, working as a concept artist and illustrator for an animation studio. However, after a few years, she decided to leave and search for something else. In recent years, she decided to focus on linocut, regaining her passion for printmaking.

Now she works as an independent artist in her small studio.

Imperfections

One of my favourite parts of working with physical materials, such as inks and linoleum blocks, is that you will inevitably have small deviations and imperfections in each print.

Be it a small dot on a paper that was not supposed to be there, or two inks having different densities that sometimes make them look conflicting with each other, or simply a specific sheet of hand-processed paper that has natural marks on it. This gives each work and each print its own uniqueness.

It took me a very long time in my career to start embracing the imperfections and see them as an important part of my art.

Behind the scenes

Before seeing the light of day, each art piece goes through a long journey - sketching an idea, playing with different colours, transferring a design to a block of linoleum, carving the design, searching for the right type of paper, experimenting with different inks, etc. And, of course, finding mistakes and redoing this all from scratch.

Mission

I just want to make beautiful things and let everyone find their own meaning in them.
